What is Spyware?

When mushrooms pop up from the ground, they are only the visible signs of a larger networking organism. Even if you pick them, you aren't stopping them from coming back. Annoying pop ups online can be considered in much the same way. You can close them, but they won't go away. These pop ups, slow internet connections, and computer malfunctions are signs of more complicated programs, networking and hidden on your computer, called spyware. Spyware consists of small programs that install themselves on your computer without your permission and often without your knowing.

How Does Spyware Work?

When you go online, many of the "fun", "free", or "helpful" downloads sneak in spyware. Even advertisements that offer pop up blocking are often guilty of causing pop ups. Although you may avoid these "offers", spyware can still get on your computer without you knowing it. A web site you visit can install spyware while you are reading the page. Spyware already installed can open ports to allow more spyware a way onto your machine. When you get enough spyware on your computer it will run frustratingly slow. This is because many of the programs will fight over control of your computer rather than allowing the computer to open a web page or a program. They can collect information about your machine's capabilities and send it to companies who monitor consumer use. Even though they claim it is not hurting you or your computer, it definitely takes up your computer's resources to perform the tasks you requested!
